The FIA world champions reunion is dominated by Germans. The only reason there’s a French car in there, is because there’s no German manufacturer in the WTCC(lol). Americans? Japanese ? Italians? Obliterated.
Let’s see how things go in 2017.

so a couple years back, a can of Red Bull would be somewhere in a picture like this between the cars?

And Audi is quitting WEC, VW is quitting WRC and Mercedes F1 is British. How’s Germany Motorsports doing again?

Strictly speaking, Mercedes F1 cars are designed and built in Britain, the engines too. Like many F1 teams they have an assumed nationality but everything is done in Britain.

If Mercedes F1 is British, Toyota WEC would be German. So would Hyundai WRC. But that’s not how stuff works.

I remember I had a huuuge debate defending Toyota WEC being Japanese and someone going on and on how they are German after they won the 2014 WEC Championship.... I guess I was right?

Not FIA.

Yes. We live in a global world, so the source of the the money and the company who has the initiative to begin a racing project gives the nationality of the team, not the location of the operation. The anthem from the podium moment clearly confirms that.

Ahh, so this FIA are like a junior series? They do dirt ovals?

Some would say that the Ekström Audi team is Swedish too.

What’s very cool about this photo is how huge the in fact quite small Ekström Audi looks compared to the Porsche and the Mercedes. Imagine how it would look if the Focus RS of Bakkerud was displayed.

I thought audi had the rs3 in the wtcc? or is that just the btcc?

I think that’s because the FIA “World Championships” are better defined as “European which occasional weekend romps to other locations Championships”. F1 and WEC have almost half their races in Europe. WRC has 10 out of 14 races (13 actually since Beijing was cancelled) in Europe. And I thought DTM was supposed to be German cars specifically.
Sure there’s other teams from outside Europe competing, but they’re not nearly as numerous. And of course, the more teams you have, the more likely it is that one will be good (assuming any given team theoretically has equal chance to do well). As such, I’d say non-European teams do fairly well on average.
It reminds me of all the American sports leagues that label their winners as “World Champions”, even though the only other competitors are a handful of teams from Canada and Mexico.
And is F1 the only series up there that an Italian team even competes in?

Super Trofeo is IMSA? I think Ferrari Challenge is for sure

We should send blood samples from each team into Ancestry.com, and let them determine the nationality of the team.
